Opportunity: Work with the TFCCS site planning team to come up with an elegant and pedestrian friendly wayfinding system that encourages visitors to explore the church grounds.
Solution: “Create signage that is fun and engaging while also respectful to the style of the building architecture.” This was the request of the First Church of Christ Scientist in Boston. The site designed by I.M. Pei has a combination of traditional and modern structures each needing to be treated individually. The strategy for the building signage was to soften the hardness of the plaza landscape and aid pedestrians in the navigation of the large site.
A 45′ high “Sunday school totem” acts like a beacon for the building and is the largest internally illuminated sign structure in the city. Large portraits of children from the Sunday school were used as the graphic element to identify the building.
The entryway to “The Christian Science Monitor.” is made up of two key elements. Strategically placed banner poles identify the entry walkway and are clad with sculptural elements which represent the wheat from the Monitors mast head and logo. The entrance sign hides the old signage to the building which was carved into the building’s entrance header. The new sign is made up of a large curved stainless panel with three dimensional laser cut brass letters mounted to the surface using the “Monitor’s” mast head typeface.
